Our Language

Strengthening Our Voice

Lik̓ʷala is an essential part of who we are as Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ people. Our language carries the voices of our ancestors, our histories, teachings, values, laws, and relationships with one another and the lands and waters of our territory. It teaches us our gʷayilelas—our ways of being—and strengthens our sense of identity, belonging, and responsibility to future generations.

Because colonization interrupted the passing of Lik̓ʷala from one generation to the next, revitalization is urgently important. By speaking, teaching, recording, and bringing Lik̓ʷala back into our homes, schools, ceremonies, and community gatherings, we honour those who protected the language and ensure that our children and grandchildren can carry it forward with pride. Revitalizing Lik̓ʷala is more than saving words; it is an act of healing, cultural continuity, and self-determination that strengthens the whole Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ community.
