Overview
The Community Services Department supports the well-being of Wei Wai Kum members at every stage of life by providing coordinated, culturally grounded programs and services. Designed to strengthen families, support Elders, promote health and safety, and respond to community needs, these services bring together Social Services, Elders programs, Recreation, youth services, and family supports.
Our objective is to serve all Wei Wai Kum members—both those who live at home and those who live away—ensuring programs remain accessible and inclusive. Through this collective work, we strive to ensure every member feels connected to and supported within Nation life.
Recreation
Youth Worker / Recreation Coordinator
The Wei Wai Kum First Nation supports the social growth, confidence, and self-development of youth through recreation and youth programming that is engaging, inclusive, and culturally grounded. Through a Recreation Coordinator, the Nation offers a range of activities that provide a fun, safe, and supportive environment where youth and adults can learn, connect, and work together.
Programs include a variety of indoor and outdoor activities such as swimming, bowling, sports, recreation games, and arts and crafts. Youth programming is often coordinated with the Elders Worker and cultural groups to strengthen connections to Ligʷiłdaxʷ culture and the Liq’wala language, and to support the sharing of traditional teachings.
Additional programming includes day camps offered during spring and summer school breaks. Through participation, youth build self-confidence, leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills while strengthening their connection to community and culture.
Family Preservation/Designated Band Representative
The Wei Wai Kum Family Preservation Program provides essential support to children and families by blending compassionate advocacy with a deep commitment to the Nation’s inherent rights. By navigating the complexities of the MCFD system and court processes, the program ensures that family voices are respected and that the Nation remains a lead partner in all planning and decision-making. Following Wei Wai Kum’s 2024 recognition as an Indigenous Governing Body, the program has advanced foundational work on the 92.1 Agreement, rooted in the cultural concept of Q̓ʷalayu—”my reason for living.” This milestone reinforces a shift toward self-determination, focusing on prevention and the least intrusive measures possible to preserve family unity and uphold the sacred wellbeing of the community’s children.
