Our Culture

Ǧilakas’la Ǧilakas’la . Wei Wai Kum Wei Wai Kum First Nation is deeply rooted in its traditional territories. We are dedicated to building a healthy and prosperous community, grounded in the strength of our language, culture, and history.

We are part of the Ligʷiłdaxʷ Ligʷiłdaxʷ group of tribes, which historically included the Wei Wai Kum, We Wai Kai, Walitsima / Kahkahmatsis, and Kwiakah. The Ligʷiłdaxʷ are the southernmost group of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations, which have historically occupied the central-to-north Vancouver Island, adjacent mainland inlets (Seymour, Smith, Kingcome, Knight, and Loughborough Inlets) and inside passage areas. The Ligʷiłdaxʷ speak a slightly different dialect (Lik̓ʷala) Lik̓ʷala from the Kwakwa’la spoken among other Kwakwaka’wakw. Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw

Lik̓ʷala Lik̓ʷala is our language and it’s an essential part of who we are as Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ people. Our language carries the voices of our ancestors, our histories, teachings, values, laws, and relationships with one another and the lands and waters of our territory. It teaches us our gʷayilelas Gʷayilelas —our ways of being. It strengthens our sense of identity, belonging, and responsibility to future generations. Visit our Language page for more information and learning resources.

As a self determining Nation, we uphold our laws and culture and our responsibilities to our people, lands, waters, and future generations. Our government delivers programs and services that strengthen community well being, protect our territory, and advance our vision of a healthy, vibrant Nation rooted in our values.

Our work is guided by mayaxəla Mayaxəla , respect for all things, and noqigila, noqigila wisdom and knowledge. Through strong governance, careful planning, and community engagement, we are building a future that reflects who we are and where we are going.
