Overview
The Stewardship and Resource Management Department upholds Wei Wai Kum’s responsibility to care for our lands, waters, and resources. Guided by traditional knowledge and science, the department works to protect ecosystems, cultural heritage, and community access to the territory.
This work includes the Guardian Watchmen Program, Cultural Heritage and Protection program, Kelp Garden and Restoration program, and general stewardship planning that reflects Wei Wai Kum laws and values.
Referrals
Wei Wai Kum First Nation is committed to protecting our lands, waters, cultural heritage, and inherent rights. The referral process is one of the ways the Nation reviews and responds to proposed activities within our territory that may impact our rights, interests, or environment.
Referrals are typically received from federal, provincial, or municipal governments, as well as industry proponents, regarding projects such as resource development, infrastructure, land use changes, environmental assessments, and research activities. These referrals trigger an internal review to assess potential impacts on Wei Wai Kum title and rights, cultural sites, harvesting areas, and environmental values.
The referral process includes:
- Initial intake and tracking of the referral
- Technical review by relevant departments, including Stewardship and Resource Management, Lands and Development, and Treaty and Intergovernmental Relations
- Identification of potential impacts to rights, title, cultural heritage, and environmental values
- Coordination with leadership and, where appropriate, hereditary representatives and knowledge holders
- Development of a formal response outlining concerns, conditions, or required accommodations
Through this process, Wei Wai Kum ensures that consultation obligations are upheld and that projects within our territory respect our laws, governance frameworks, and long term community priorities. The referral process supports informed decision making and strengthens Nation to Nation engagement with governments and proponents.
